RFA Decor supports multiple artists and the many styles and mediums they work in. Our art consultants have learned, through many years of experience, various tips for helping you find your personal art style.
There are so many styles, such as:
- Abstract
- Photorealism
- Street Art
- Pop Art
It could take some experimentation before you find your personal art style.
View a Lot of Art
A first step in finding your art style is to view a lot of art. Check out different artists and mediums until you find the ones that speak to you! It is a good way to hone your viewing skills and find what inspires you.
Visit galleries; look at art books, magazines, websites and social media accounts; take or save pictures of art you like and create inspiration or mood boards in real life or on Pinterest of art that appeals to you. Don’t limit your inspiration or mood board to just art. Capture the mood or feeling you want your art to evoke as well as your decorating style (whether real or aspirational).
Experiment
Have fun with the process! Don't be afraid to gather different art and decorating styles on your phone, computer, or mood board. As you start to create your “virtual” collection, you will get a feel for what speaks to you and what you like.
Analyze The Work
Gathering a collection of images, whether in a virtual or physical format, allows you to analyze them and make notes. Note whether a particular work or style evokes an emotion. If you liked it, what colors did it contain? Is there a particular color palette that the works all have in common such as bright colors or neutrals? What mediums were they created with? Is it photography? Painting? Graphic art? Is there a particular subject matter that all of the works have in common? Are they abstract? Representational? Figurative? Do they have a nautical theme? Your notes can help you define your taste and style.
Narrow Your Focus
Once you have taken the time to analyze your images, you can start to narrow your focus and figure out what subjects and styles will complement your decor: abstract, portraits, landscapes, traditional, transitional, modern or contemporary art.
Get Ready to Buy
Once you’ve completed your analysis and know your style, you are ready to buy. Look for websites or galleries that specialize in the artists or styles that appeal to you. Take measurements and pictures of the spaces where the art will go, and be armed with your budget or price range to help you narrow your selections.
Don't Be Afraid
As your begin to live with art, you may find that your tastes change over time. As you learn more, your taste in art may become more sophisticated. Don't be afraid to change!
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes either. But if you are hesitant to take the first step, an art consultant can help walk you through the entire art-buying process so that you end up with art that you love.
